About Bright Minds Project

A note from the founder

Hi! My name is Zoe Epstein and I started the Bright Minds Project because I wanted to make a positive difference in the lives of those in my community. Simply put, I was fed up with what I saw around me, watching the people I love become overwhelmed and controlled by stress and mental health issues they felt they had to keep hidden. I know what it's like to feel like you can't ask for help, that mental health problems are a sign of weakness instead of an opportunity for strength. I don't want anyone else to have to go through what I did, because I know firsthand that repressing mental health issues only increases the power they hold over your life. Your mental health is nothing to hide or be ashamed of, nor is it ever a competition. I want to break the unhealthy cycle of unregulated stress that so many teens my age have fallen into, and the Bright Minds Project aims to do just that through stress management, mindfulness, and advocacy.

How are we different?

Why we're here

Our Approach

It's an idea so circulated that it is almost cliché: teenagers don't listen to adults. When dealing with incredibly personal topics like mental health, solutions or tips provided by someone their own age often seem far more attractive. Because the topic of mental health is currently so taboo, making it any more approachable is pivotal to creating real change among modern teenagers.

Our Approach

Why we're here

Our Approach

Through a focus on education and understanding, we strive to create an environment where fellow students can support themselves and each other. This effectively creates an overall shift in the environment by changing the way mental health is perceived, thus facilitating long term improvement. In addition, by focusing on teens specifically we can target the mental health problems most applicable to them, namely stress management.

Why we're here

The Bright Minds Project was not created for money. It wasn't created for recognition either. The decision to start this nonprofit stemmed from the greatest motivator there is: passion. A passion for change and a passion to create a world in which mental health is not a taboo topic, but one met with understanding and a desire to help.
